J.S Bach - 6 Solo Suites BWV 1007-1012 Cello Solo Book 📚

Genre: Classical / Baroque Period

Edition Peters presents J.S. Bach's 6 Solo Suites BWV 1007-1012 for Cello Solo, a collection that has stood the test of time as one of the pinnacles of the cello repertoire. Astonishingly, these masterpieces were little known and infrequently performed until the early 20th century when cellist Pablo Casals rediscovered and recorded them, propelling them into the limelight.

Edited by Becker, the book contains suites in G, D min, C, Eb, C min, and D. These suites are not only performed and recorded by acclaimed cellists today but also hold a key spot in educational settings, being set for the ABRSM Cello Syllabus Grade 8.

Their rich harmonic textures and technical demands make them essential study and performance pieces for any serious cellist, offering deep insights into the musical language of the Baroque period.

Who Was Johann Sebastian Bach?

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western classical music. Born into a musical family, Bach held various musical positions such as Kapellmeister (music director), Cantor, and organist throughout his life, primarily in churches and for royalty.

His extensive oeuvre encompasses a wide range of musical genres, including sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra, and solo instruments. He is perhaps best known for pieces like the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, the Brandenburg Concertos, and his solo suites for cello and violin, among others. He was a master of counterpoint and brought unparalleled complexity and emotional depth to his compositions.

Bach's influence extends far beyond his lifetime. Although some of his works were known and appreciated during his life, it wasn't until the 19th and 20th centuries that his compositions became widely performed and studied, setting standards for compositional technique and musical expression that remain influential to this day. His works are staples in the repertoires of professional and amateur musicians alike, and they are also studied for their theoretical complexity and perfection of form.
