Who Was Claude Debussy?

Claude Debussy was a French composer born on August 22, 1862, in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France, and died on March 25, 1918, in Paris. He is often regarded as one of the most prominent figures in the world of Impressionist music, although he himself disliked the term. Debussy's work marked a departure from the Romantic musical tradition, aiming for a more nuanced and atmospheric form of musical expression.

Debussy studied at the Paris Conservatoire, initially with the intent of becoming a pianist, but later shifting his focus to composition. His compositions are characterised by their innovative use of harmony, their exploration of timbre and colour, and their freedom from traditional formal structures.

Some of his most well-known works include "Clair de Lune," "La Mer," "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune," and the opera "Pelléas et Mélisande." His music had a profound influence on subsequent generations of composers, both in France and around the world, and remains widely performed and studied today.
