June Emerson - 90 Easy Bassoon Studies Book 📚

Grades 1-5

A collection of progressively presented studies which are intended to encourage musicality from an early age but cater for the mature beginner as well.

"90 Easy Bassoon Studies" by June Emerson is an essential resource for bassoon students ranging from grades 1-5. This 44-page book provides a carefully curated collection of studies that progress gradually in difficulty, designed to foster musicality from the outset while being approachable for both young learners and mature beginners.

The studies focus on various technical and interpretative aspects of bassoon playing, with each piece addressing a specific musical or technical point. This targeted approach helps students build their skills systematically, ensuring a solid foundation in both technique and musical expression. June Emerson, leveraging her extensive experience and sensitivity to students' needs, includes a short note before each study, offering valuable tips on technique or interpretation to guide the learners effectively.

In addition to Emerson's own compositions, which make up nearly a third of the book, the studies incorporate a diverse range of material from notable composers and educators. The inclusion of orchestral and chamber music extracts introduces students early to the types of music they will encounter in more advanced settings. This exposure is invaluable, as it not only enhances the learning experience but also prepares students for future ensemble playing.

The selection of studies includes works by Weissenborn, known for his influential bassoon studies, and pieces adapted from Hinke's "Elementary Method for Oboe." Also featured are studies from composers like Popp, Gariboldi, and Kohler, who are traditionally associated with other woodwind instruments, thereby offering a unique and broad perspective on woodwind technique.

June Emerson's "90 Easy Bassoon Studies" was initially compiled at the request of a friend who began learning the bassoon in her mid-fifties, highlighting the accessibility and relevance of this collection for adult beginners not wanting to be overwhelmed by overly demanding pieces. This thoughtful compilation makes it an excellent choice for anyone looking to start or continue their journey with the bassoon, ensuring progress through enjoyable and musically enriching studies.
