Bach Fact: Johann Sebastian Bach was known for his incredible improvisation skills. He was a master improviser and was often called upon to demonstrate his improvisational abilities during his performances. In fact, he once engaged in a musical contest with the renowned French organist Louis Marchand. However, Marchand was so intimidated by Bach's reputation as an improviser that he fled the city before the competition could take place. This incident further solidified Bach's reputation as a virtuoso and one of the greatest improvisers of his time.
