The Swing Bass 66 Funkmaster series revolutionized electric bass playing, bringing the bassist from the background to the forefront of the stage. These stainless steel roundwound strings, perfected by James How and John Entwistle, quickly became the industry standard with their bright, punchy, high-energy sound that is a staple in early rock music.

John Entwistle’s experience in 1966 marks a significant turning point. Dissatisfied with the E and A strings from various brands, Entwistle worked directly with James How, leading to the realization that the core of the strings needed adjustment, not just the wire winding. This collaboration led to the creation of strings that vibrated properly, capturing the optimal Danelectro sound Entwistle sought.

After refining the strings to vibrate correctly and adjusting the gauges for better playability, Rotosound offered to name these new strings after Entwistle, provided they continued to supply him with strings for free. This partnership extended to developing medium and short scale strings to accommodate Entwistle's diverse collection of bass guitars.
