Robert Schumann's Concerto In A Minor Op.54 composed for Piano Duet Book

New Urtext Edition

2 Pianos, 4 Hands

Schumann's 'Concerto in A Minor, Op. 54', originated from a single-movement *Phantasie* for piano and orchestra, completed in 1841. Initially, Clara Schumann performed the *Phantasie* with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, but it wasn't publicly performed or published.

In 1845, Schumann expanded the work in Dresden, adding a second and third movement to create the complete concerto. The premiere took place in December 1845 with Clara as the soloist, under the baton of Ferdinand Hiller. The concerto's success was solidified with a performance at the Leipzig Gewandhaus in 1846, conducted by Mendelssohn.

This New Urtext Edition of the concerto is arranged for piano duet (solo piano with orchestral reduction). Clara Schumann's long-standing promotion of the piece helped it become a beloved repertory work, though Robert Schumann himself never performed it publicly. This edition preserves the legacy of both Robert and Clara, reflecting the concerto's historical and musical significance. 116 pages.

Who Was Robert Schumann?

Robert Schumann (1810–1856) was a German composer and influential music critic, widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era. Known for his deeply expressive works, Schumann composed piano music, symphonies, lieder (art songs), and chamber music. His compositions often reflect his inner emotional struggles and poetic inspirations. Schumann was also a key figure in promoting the works of other composers, such as Johannes Brahms. His marriage to Clara Schumann, a renowned pianist and composer, was a defining aspect of his life. Tragically, Schumann's life was cut short by mental illness, but his legacy endures through his timeless and imaginative music.
