Who Was Robert Schumann?

Robert Schumann (1810–1856) was a German composer and music critic, one of the most important figures of the Romantic era in music. Known primarily for his piano music, songs (lieder), and orchestral music, his works are emotionally rich and often deeply autobiographical. Schumann was also a prolific writer and editor of a music journal where he championed the works of then-young composers like Johannes Brahms and criticized the more commercial trends of the day.

Schumann's life was marked by passionate relationships, the most significant of which was with his wife, Clara Wieck Schumann, herself a renowned pianist and composer. His later years were marred by mental illness, and he died relatively young, but his influence on subsequent generations of composers and musicians is immeasurable. His works like "Carnaval," "Kinderszenen" (Scenes from Childhood), and the song cycle "Dichterliebe" (A Poet's Love) are considered staples of the Romantic repertoire.
