Johannes Brahms - Sonatas Op 120 Clarinet with Piano Accompaniment Book

Urtext Edition

Johannes Brahms' Sonatas Op. 120 for Clarinet and Piano is a pivotal work in the clarinet repertoire, originally composed in 1894 after Brahms met with clarinetist Richard Muhlfeld.

The two sonatas, celebrated for their deep expressiveness, were first performed privately and soon became widely admired. Brahms wrote these works during his summer retreat in Ischl, specifically asking Muhlfeld to bring his B-flat clarinet for the sessions.

This edition of the sonatas, edited according to the Brahms Complete Edition, presents an authoritative Urtext version. With detailed performance directions, it captures the beauty and emotional complexity that have made these sonatas staples for clarinet players worldwide. The book spans 87 pages and includes both the clarinet part and the piano accompaniment.

Johannes Brahms

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was a German composer and pianist, widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of classical music. His music is known for its depth, emotional intensity, and technical complexity, blending classical traditions with innovative ideas. Brahms composed symphonies, concertos, chamber music, piano works, and choral compositions.

His style is often seen as a bridge between the Classical and Romantic eras, incorporating elements of both, particularly the influence of Beethoven. Brahms is celebrated for his symphonic works, including his four symphonies, and his chamber music, such as the piano quartets and string quartets, which are central to the classical repertoire. Despite his early reputation as a traditionalist, Brahms's music was groundbreaking in its emotional expression and structural complexity.
