Who Was Sonny Chua?
Sonny Chua was born on 2 November 1967 in Penang, Malaysia, where he grew up as the eldest of four children. During his childhood, his family relocated to various places, including Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Malacca, before eventually immigrating to Australia. In Melbourne, he continued his piano studies, attending the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School. Later, he pursued a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Melbourne, Conservatorium of Music, with a specialization in piano performance.
While primarily self-taught as a composer, Sonny Chua also undertook formal studies in composition with notable instructors such as Peter Tahourdin, Barry Conyngham, and Brenton Broadstock. Sonny Chua's musical compositions are characterised by their playful exploration of various styles and musical techniques. He aimed for the beauty of simplicity and brevity in his music, which spoke in an accessible and lively language. Many of his published works were educational in nature, created to help his students develop their performance techniques.
His compositions have left a lasting impact, with his music included in all Australian examination syllabi. His works have been published by renowned publishers like Hal Leonard and Midnight Editions. Sonny Chua's piano compositions are frequently performed in competitions for young musicians and featured on radio broadcasts. He was also in demand as a speaker on piano teaching and music education, sharing his expertise at workshops, festivals, and conferences. His papers on these topics have been published in various conference proceedings and educational publications.
From 2002 to 2007, Sonny Chua served as an educator at Melbourne High School. He was the last Director of Music at the MacRobertson Girls' High School and later took on the role of Coordinator of Keyboard Studies at Carey Baptist Grammar School in Melbourne. Sadly, Sonny Chua passed away on 9 September 2020, following a stroke. His contributions to music education and his legacy as a composer continue to be celebrated by students, teachers, and musicians around the world.
