While primarily self-taught as a composer, Sonny Chua also undertook formal studies in composition with notable instructors such as Peter Tahourdin, Barry Conyngham, and Brenton Broadstock. Sonny Chua's musical compositions are characterised by their playful exploration of various styles and musical techniques. He aimed for the beauty of simplicity and brevity in his music, which spoke in an accessible and lively language. Many of his published works were educational in nature, created to help his students develop their performance techniques.
His compositions have left a lasting impact, with his music included in all Australian examination syllabi. From 2002 to 2007, Sonny Chua served as an educator at Melbourne High School. He was the last Director of Music at the MacRobertson Girls' High School and later took on the role of Coordinator of Keyboard Studies at Carey Baptist Grammar School in Melbourne. Sadly, Sonny Chua passed away on 9 September 2020, following a stroke. His contributions to music education and his legacy as a composer continue to be celebrated by students, teachers, and musicians around the world.
